About The Estate:
Deep in the heart of Napa Valley, H.W. Crabb planted a vast empire of vines in the 1860s. Eventually it grew thick with grapes, orange trees, and Italian chestnuts. So rich was it with life and bounty that Crabb nobly bestowed upon it the Greek name To Kalon, or Highest Beauty. Today, To Kalon Vineyard Company is dedicated to crafting unique expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon from this storied place, combining tradition with a modern aesthetic under the expert hand of renowned winemaker Andy Erickson.
To Kalon Vineyard® is sited between the sheltering Vaca and Mayacamas mountain ranges deep in the Napa Valley, with well-drained, gravelly soil that allows the vines to root deeply to find precious moisture and nutrients. The broad diurnal temperature shifts and reliable sun, wind, and fog provide the ideal blend of growth and rest for complex flavour development.
Winemaker Andy Erickson credits this art with helping him develop a mastery of his craft. Listening over the decades to the wealth of information that the people of Napa Valley have generously shared, and to the land and its fruit. This long journey of mind and senses has led him back to legendary To Kalon Vineyard® and a new quest to craft unique expressions from Napa’s splendid bounty.
Nearly 30 years ago, Andy got his first taste of To Kalon Vineyard as a student. He’s been obsessed ever since: “The incredible quality of the land, the incredible history. It’s a true gift to work with.” To inspire his vision for Highest Beauty, map in hand, Andy tasted his way through 56 individually fermented blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon from To Kalon Vineyard. To connect flavour and texture with soil and sun, he then walked the blocks, fine tuning his selections.
The 2016 vintage was a spectacular debut, with a score of 99 points from James Suckling, and 97 points from both The Wine Spectator and Jeb Dunnuck, paving the way for an incredible new legacy in the Napa.
In addition to his work at To Kalon Vineyard Co., winemaker Andy Erickson is renowned for his work at Dalla Valle, Favia and Mayacamas Vineyards. He has also consulted for Colgin Cellars, OVID and Screaming Eagle.
Each bottle is individually numbered and adorned with a silvered logo on its shoulder. The cap is hand sealed with wax.
