About The Wine
2016 was a dream vintage in Napa Valley, providing ideal conditions and producing wines of incredible energy and vineyard expression.
The family began crafting the Stewart wines 20 years ago with a promise in mind; delivering exceptional, age worthy wines, while taking you on a journey. The NOMAD Collection builds upon that promise with an exploration of Napa Valley’s most exquisite vineyards and their unique terroir as Stewart Cellars showcases the Beckstoffer Heritage Vineyards.
The Beckstoffer To Kalon vineyard, perhaps Napa's most famous, is located on the lower slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains in east-Oakville. The Stewart Cellars To Kalon is from 100% Clone 4 Cabernet Sauvignon that was planted in 1996, harvested in October 2016.
Whole-berry fermentaion in stainless steel fermenters was followed by wet cap immersion, totalling 28 days of maceration. It was racked into French oak barrells (87.5% new) for 22 months prior to bottling.
Perhaps the most famous of the Beckstoffer vineyards, Beckstoffer To Kalon was purchased from Beaulieu Vineyard in 1993. Napa pioneer Hamilton Crabb first planted the vineyard in 1868, and it has produced some of the Napa Valley's best red grapes ever since. Replanted in 1994 to multiple clones of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc with modern trellising and closer vine spacing, the vineyard produces several highly coveted vineyard-designated wines. In 2007 the property was placed under a land conservation easement that forever prohibits non-agricultural development.

"Deep purple-black colored, the 2016 Nomad Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon slides sensuously out of the glass with slowly building notes of blackberry preserves, crushed blueberries and warm cassis with touches of wood smoke, sandalwood, wilted roses, charcuterie and underbrush plus a hint of dried mint. The full-bodied palate exudes hedonistic exotic spice and black fruit preserves layers with a velvety texture and seamless freshness, finishing long and layered."
