About The Wine
2016 was a dream vintage in Napa Valley, providing ideal conditions and producing wines of incredible energy and vineyard expression.
The family began crafting the Stewart wines 20 years ago with a promise in mind; delivering exceptional, age worthy wines, while taking you on a journey. The NOMAD Collection builds upon that promise with an exploration of Napa Valley’s most exquisite vineyards and their unique terroir as Stewart Cellars showcases the Beckstoffer Heritage Vineyards.
The Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper vineyard is located on the lower slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains in south-Oakville. The Stewart Cellars Dr. Crane is from 100% Clone 3309 Cabernet Sauvignon that was planted in 1999, harvested in October 2016.
Whole-berry fermentaion in stainless steel fermenters was followed by wet cap immersion, totalling 24 days of maceration. It was racked into French oak barrells (80% new) for 22 months prior to bottling.
Located north of the town of Yountville in the Oakville AVA, Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper was originally part of a large piece of land owned by George C. Yount, from whom the town of Yountville takes its name. Purchased by Charles Hopper and given to his daughter Missouri in 1877, the land was planted to wine grapes and, as much of the Napa land was at that time, prunes and walnuts. In 1960, the land was purchased by Bruce Kelham as part of the historic Vine Hill Ranch. Purchased by Beckstoffer Vineyards from the Kelham family in 1996, the vineyard is today planted with multiple clones of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In 2002, the property was placed under a land conservation easement that forever prohibits non-agricultural development.
Stewart Cellars NOMAD Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Cabernet Sauvignon 2016
"A true blockbuster, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon NOMAD Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Vineyard comes from a terrific valley floor site and spent 22 months in 80% new French oak. It’s a ripe, full-bodied, powerful effort that has awesome notes of chocolaty black fruits, smoke tobacco, graphite, and earth. Possessing loads of fruit, sweet tannins, and a seamless, weightless texture, it’s a thrill a minute and already impossible to resist, and I see no need to delay gratification. Drink this total sexpot over the coming 15-20 years."
