About The Wine
2016 was a dream vintage in Napa Valley, providing ideal conditions and producing wines of incredible energy and vineyard expression.
The family began crafting the Stewart wines 20 years ago with a promise in mind; delivering exceptional, age worthy wines, while taking you on a journey. The NOMAD Collection builds upon that promise with an exploration of Napa Valley’s most exquisite vineyards and their unique terroir as Stewart Cellars showcases the Beckstoffer Heritage Vineyards.
The Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard is located almost in the centre of St. Helena, and the Cabernet Sauvignons crafted here have often drawn comparison to Château Haut-Brion. The Stewart Cellars Dr. Crane is from 100% Clone 337 Cabernet Sauvignon that was planted in 1998, harvested in October 2016.
Whole-berry fermentaion in stainless steel fermenters was followed by wet cap immersion, totalling 25 days of maceration. It was racked into French oak barrells (87.5% new) for 22 months prior to bottling.
Napa pioneer Dr. George Belden Crane originally planted Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard in 1858. During the 1920's the Chinatown of the City of St. Helena was located on the site. Acquired by Beckstoffer Vineyards in 1997, the vineyard’s gravelly loam soils were replanted in 1998 to multiple clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
Stewart Cellars NOMAD Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Cabernet Sauvignon 2016
"The deep purple-black colored 2016 Nomad Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane is a little youthfully subdued to begin, opening out to reveal tantalizing glimpses of baked redcurrants, cassis, chocolate-covered cherries and mulberries with nuances of crushed rocks, tilled black soil and violets. Full-bodied and sporting layers of tightly wound black fruits and earth-inspired flavors, it has a firm, fine-grained frame and a very long, multifaceted finish. A stunning expression of Dr. Crane!"
