About The Wine
The 2018 Gnesa Vineyard Chardonnay comes from the estate vineyard located immediately to the west of the home ranch. Planted in 1997 by the Gnesa family, this self-rooted parcel is entirely clone 5 planted on a north facing slope of pure Arnold sand.
The grapes were harvested on 26th October at a Brix of 24.4, and had 12 months élevage in neutral French oak barrels.
SPEAR Estate Gnesa Vineyard Chardonnay 2018
"The 2018 Chardonnay Gnesa Vineyard is laced with the essence of tangerine oil, hazelnut, spice, dried flowers and honey. In the glass, the Gnesa offers striking depth and oiliness, but it does so while remaining translucent, showing tremendous nuance and tons of personality."
93 points, Antonio Galloni (Vinous, Aug. 2020)
"The 2018 Chardonnay Gnesa also comes from the Gnesa Vineyard but was brought up in neutral French oak. This light gold-hued effort offers a richer, buttery style that includes plenty of orchard fruits, toasted bread, spice, and honeysuckle aromas and flavors, medium to full body, good acidity, and a clean finish."
92 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Aug. 2020)
"This is a stunning nose, such focused and pure aromatics. Lots of steely minerality with and incredible fruit profile. This is crystalline and laser sharp. The palate has so much energy, it's simply gorgeous. There is so much intensity, crisp fruit and brilliant acidity and a texture to die for. Stunning now, yet so much potential. This is a brilliant Chardonnay, and classic Sta. Rita Hills."
