About The Wine:
Nouveau Monde comes from a very special block in a vineyard located in the Sonoma Coast appellation near Petaluma. The site has a southern exposure and a gentle slope. Approximately 20 miles from the Pacific Ocean and just 9 miles from the San Francisco Bay, cool nights and gentle breezes contribute to a temperate climate.
The 2013 growing season was ideal in many respects. Moderate rainfall followed by warmer and drier early spring prompted early bud break. Late spring rains encouraged growth and nice weather during bloom allowed for a good set. The warm early summer followed by cooler than normal temperatures slowed ripening to fully develop exceptional flavors and colour. The team harvested at midnight and field sorted. The clusters were gently destemmed. Following a brief cold soak, smooth fermentation of small lots with ritual manual punch downs was complete before barreling and aging. The wine spent 16 months in French oak, 20% new.
Beginning with the 2009 vintage Don and Claude made the decision to return to the roots of Burgundy and the craftsmanship of the Cistercian monks of Vougeot to focus on single clones from single vineyards and matured in single cooperage. The limited production MonoClone Pinot Noirs reflect their commitment to harness the purity and complexity of one clone from one vineyard. The Pommard clone is used for the Nouveau Monde Pinot Noir.
Soliste Nouveau Monde Pinot Noir 2013
"Pommard clone grown in Petaluma Gap. Harvested at midnight and field sorted. 100% de-stemmed, brief cold soak, gentle fermentation of small lots with ritual manual punch downs. Aged 16 months in French oak barrels, 20% new. Claude says, “Incredibly aromatic, exotic and elegant Pinot Noir that beautifully marries the virtues of both Volnay and Pommard.” Moderate garnet color in the glass. Haunting aromas of dark fruits, potpourri, pine sap, rose petal and wine cave. Polished, silken, and dreamy on the palate with mid weight flavors of boysenberry, blackberry, tea leaves and a hint of burnt tobacco. Spot-on balance with a seductive texture and a virile finish that gives and gives."
97 points, William Gaffney (Prince of Pinot, April 2018)
"Super light in appreance, but a nose of dark cherries, wild strawberry compot and a savoury core of dired bay leaf and sandalwood. The palate is crisp, curchy, with a delicous sour red fruit acidity, lots of cranberry and redcurrant all balanced with a slight creaminess on the mid palate as it fills out on the finish. Simply delicious, really ggood and moreish, elegant but intense. Just 12.9% alcohol!"
