About The Wine:
After abundant rains during winter and mild spring weather, hot summer temperatures brought the fruits to optimal maturity with no major stress in the vineyard. High heat vintages typically result in a fleshy, powerful ripeness, however the 2017’s present with an abundance of structure, fresh fruit, and delicate balance, showcasing a more restrained side of the SLOAN ESTATE vineyard.
The Estate’s flagship wine since its inaugural 2000 vintage, SLOAN Proprietary Red (500 cases made each vintage) is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. It has a unique character that stems from the Sacrashe vineyard high above Rutherford.
Layered with remarkable complexity and intensity of flavours and aromas, SLOAN exhibits a gorgeous tension between elements of grace and power, balance and opulence, as well as age and vibrancy. It is a precise wine with defined structure and immense aging potential and at the same time, a seductive wine of exceptional fruit finesse, minerality, and multi-layered mouthfeel. Crafted with meticulous care from vine to bottle and exacting standards for achieving the highest quality, this uninhibitedly rich and extraordinarily pure wine is a beautiful, raw expression of the terroir.
The wine sees 26 months in French Oak, (Darnajou and Taransaud) 100% new. Martha and the team process half of the fruit by barrel fermentation and half in stainless steel to help better manage the smaller lots. All wines see an extended maceration period after a cold soak.
SLOAN ESTATE, SLOAN Proprietary Red 2017
"Wonderful aromas of blueberries, blackberries, mushrooms, pine and blackcurrants. Some violets, too. Full-bodied, yet so refined and polished with wonderful fruit and a linear tannin structure that integrates beautifully into the wine. It’s so balanced and beautiful. Hard not to drink now, but better after 2023."
98 points, James Suckling (Dec. 2020)
"The 2017 Proprietary Red brings everything up a solid notch. Dense purple/plum-hued, with gorgeous, Graves-like nose of blackcurrants, chocolate, scorched earth, tobacco leaf, and gravelly earth, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a polished, elegant texture, building yet sweet tannins, and a great finish. Very much in the style of the 2017 vintage with its nicely concentrated, elegant, reserved yet endearing style, it's going to drink nicely for 20-25 years."
