About The Wine
Hope’s Cuvée Chardonnay showcases Signorello's utmost dedication to excellence, named in honor of Ray's mother, Hope Signorello. It benefits from an intimate understanding of their 5.12 acre parcel on the west side of the hill. Planted 38 years ago with clonal selections from one of the region’s earliest outstanding vineyards, it is now one of the oldest Chardonnay vineyards in Napa Valley. Night-time hand-harvesting into small trays protects the varietal’s refined and delicate flavors. This naturally fermented, unfined & unfiltered Chardonnay can be enjoyed over the next 15 years.
2017 began with abundant rainfall. Spring weather was mild, resulting in extended flowering in some areas with little shatter. Vines were vigorous through the summer thanks to the winter rains. Three heat events, including one over Labor Day weekend, kicked harvest into high gear but cool weather immediately after allowed sugar levels to return to normal. Our red grapes were picked over the next few weeks. All our fruit had been picked and was safely in the fermentation tanks or barrels by October 8, the day our winery was consumed by the historic Napa Valley fires. Fortunately, our vines and wines escaped the fire’s wrath.
Careful pressing of whole clusters minimized skin contact. This gentle process helped the wine achieve balance as well as develop a silky mouth-feel and enhanced the aging potential. Using native yeasts, the wine fermented in French oak barrels, did not undergo malolactic fermentation and spent 9 months on the lees in French oak barrels (50% new) prior to bottling.

"Aged in 50% new French oak and bottled in June 2018 the 2017 Chardonnay Hope's Cuvee opens with notions of honeydew melon, fresh peaches, ripe Bosc pears and apple pie plus nuances of crushed rocks, crème caramel and buttered popcorn. Medium-bodied, it's elegant in the mouth with a satiny texture and fantastic freshness, finishing on a savory note. 405 cases made."
