About The Wine:
"This blessed plot, this earth, this realm..." Immortal lines from William Shakespeare’s King Richard II, the source of Realm’s – and this wine’s – name.
Realm Cellars has made this Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend since 2003, their tribute to the great wines of Bordeaux’s Left Bank. Juan and Benoit consider The Bard to be the quintessential wine of Realm: a dense, weighty and concentrated wine that year in and year out showcases the very best Cabernet Sauvignon of Napa Valley.
The Bard comprises fruit from Coombsville to Calistoga, a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wine that consistently punches above its weight. 2017 was the second vintage at Realm's estate winery in the Stags Leap District, and the extra control Benoit and the team gained in the cellar shows in the wine. The Labor Day heat wave meant more work and tougher selections, but there were also more vineyard sources in 2017, i.e. more “toys” to play with!
In 2017 the Cabernet Sauvignon is from Realm’s Estate vineyard in the Stags Leap District, Beckstoffer To Kalon, Houyi, Weitz and Blair. The Merlot is from the famed Blair vineyard.
Realm Cellars The Bard 2017
"The 2017 The Bard, based on 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Merlot, is certainly one of the standouts in the vintage. This deep purple effort offers a Bordeaux'ish vibe (which is common in the vintage) in its blackcurrant, graphite, tobacco, and scorched earth aromas and flavors. These carry to a full-bodied Cabernet with beautiful balance, a distinct sense of minerality, and the structure to continue evolving nicely for another 20 years or more."
