About The Wine

This wine is a blend of the two Estate vineyards: John Sebastiano and Peake Ranch. There is a contrast between the terroir of the two vineyards that we is representative of not just sites and quality, but of the Sta. Rita Hills as a whole.

Peake Ranch, on the south side, is more protected from the wind and comprised of clay and river stone, while JSV is steep, wind-struck and primarily comprised of loam and sand. In addition, there are a half-dozen different clonal varieties (115, 667, 777, Pommard, Hyde, and Calera) that add even more complexity and diversity to this wine. It was aged in 100% French oak (40% new).

Located on the eastern end of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA on Santa Rosa Road, Peake Ranch is a 105-acre parcel with 50 acres of vines. The plantings include seven different clones of Pinot Noir, three clones of Chardonnay and two each of Syrah and Grenache. The plantings are all along a hill that covers most of the ranch, exposing the vines to the cool air that comes off the Pacific and into the Santa Ynez Valley. The combination of North, South, East and West facing slopes coupled with the exposure to varying degrees of the cool wind give the vineyard an incredible diversity of fruit flavour profiles.

The John Sebastiano Vineyard is not the easiest land to farm. While approximately one thousand acres (405 hectares) in size, only  about 15% of the property is planted to vines. The land is dominated by intense slopes with sharp, windy ridge lines and deep craggy ravines. But without all those hurdles the vineyard probably would not exhibit the power, structure, and personality we experience from the wines it produces.

Peake Ranch Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir 2018

  • "Moving to the Pinot Noirs, the 2018 Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills is 100% Pinot Noir from the Peake Ranch and John Sebastiano vineyards and was all destemmed and aged 18 months in 40% new French oak. Tart Bing cherries, raspberries, forest floor, and sappy flower and violet notes all define this beauty. It has a clean, focused, yet concentrated style that will benefit from a year in bottle."
