About the Wine
Many of the Howell Mountain Estate's vines now exhibit eighteen years of age and have established deep roots on the 120-acre hillside property. Between 1997 and 2002, O'Shaughnessy planted 29 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon. They also cultivated 6 acres of all eight of the Bordeaux blending varietals, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Malbec, Carmenere, St. Macaire, and Gros Verdot. In pursuit of maximizing their options for flavor, they utilized several different root stocks and clones for their Cabernet Sauvignon plantings.
The vines span two distinct vineyards on Howell Mountain. The Amphitheater vineyard derives its name from its shape across the hillside. The Rancho del Oso vineyard, nearest the winery, boasts a resident black bear who visits from time to time. In 2012, Betty was fortunate to purchase an adjacent 15 acres which was planted with Cabernet Sauvignon. These three vineyards are farmed exclusively to produce the Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon and Howell Mountain Merlot.
O'Shaughnessy Estate Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
“Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is redolent of warm blackberries and black cherries with hints of Indian spices, fertile soil, cedar and hoisin. Big, full-bodied and voluptuous in the mouth, the concentrated, multilayered fruit is well framed by firm, grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy."
