About The Wine

The NVD (Napa Valley Designate) Cabernet Sauvignon consists of fruit from 4 separate sites in Pritchard Hill, Soda Canyon, Calistoga, and fruit from the Howell Mountain Estate. Having access to these distinct sites within the Napa AVA allowss Sam to blend them together to create the best single variety possible while remaining true to the estate.

Although fruit is sourced from separate sites, they all share a common bond with the estate. Each of the vineyards have similar elevation, exposure, and soil. Sam oversees all farming at these separate sites and incorporates the same farming practices that are utilised at the Arkenstone estate.

The NVD Cabernet Sauvignon is quite different from the Estate Red. It is not created as a second wine or an afterthought, but meant to stand out on its own accord. It is vinified in the same fashion as our Estate Red. Each lot is kept separate until the final blending occurs in order to create the best wine possible.

It is a versatile wine that can be enjoyed upon release, or aged in the cellar and saved for a special occasion. For dining room enjoyment the NVD Cabernet Sauvignon is a way for guests to attain a better understanding of Arkenstone without going all in on the estate bottlings.

2016 was a spectacular growing season bringing us into the 5th consecutive year of drought paired with mild and even temperatures throughout.

Arkenstone NVD Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

  • "The 2016 NVD Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Calistoga, Howell Mountain, Pritchard Hill and Soda Canyon. It is composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 22 months in 75% new French oak. Very deep garnet-purple, it has quite a meaty nose with notions of charcuterie, cigar boxes and dusty soil with a core of plum preserves, warm cassis and fragrant earth plus a waft of sautéed herbs. Full, concentrated and richly fruited with a firm frame of ripe, grainy tannins and great freshness, it finishes long with loads of baking spices coming through."

"Brought up in 75% new barrels, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon NVD comes from sites throughout the valley and could be considered the entry-level wine of the estate. It’s a beautiful 2016 offering lots of crème de cassis, toasted spices, and hints of vanilla in a full-bodied, seamless, charming and impeccably balanced style. Drink it over the coming 10-15 years."
